TIE-BREAK: Sport as a Bridge Between Cultures, Skills and Cities
The TIE-BREAK project – an acronym for Teambuilding In Europe: Building and Renewing Athletes’ Key Competences – is an Erasmus+ initiative that places volleyball at the heart of a broader pathway of social inclusion, personal growth and the development of transversal skills. In its apparent simplicity, the sporting metaphor becomes a powerful educational tool: through play, dialogue and shared commitment, TIE-BREAK fosters cohesion among participants from diverse cultural backgrounds, contributing to emotional well-being and individual motivation.
Volleyball is not merely a sport; it becomes a means to build trust, friendship, resilience and team spirit. Matches, victories and defeats experienced together act as catalysts for authentic relationships, creating a positive environment in which every participant feels valued and engaged. The principle is simple yet effective: we learn better together, and sport strengthens and consolidates this process.
Who Promotes the Project
TIE-BREAK is a mobility and exchange project within the Erasmus+ programme, dedicated to the development of sporting, relational and cultural competences.
Among the promoting organisations is ACe20, which has solid experience in coordinating and managing European projects in the educational and cultural fields. Alongside it operates Lighthouse, an organisation active in intercultural training and adult education.
The two organisations contribute complementary expertise: ACe20 ensures strong project design and management capacity, while Lighthouse oversees the educational, linguistic and intercultural dimensions. This synergy enhances the project’s impact, making it structured, effective and genuinely inclusive.
Who TIE-BREAK Is For
The initiative primarily involves athletes, students and sports practitioners interested in developing or strengthening key competences such as leadership, team building, resilience, inclusion and collaboration.
However, the project also extends to local communities: teachers, educators, trainers, sports associations, families and local institutions are an integral part of the pathway. Through transnational events and local activities, TIE-BREAK creates opportunities for cultural and relational exchange, broadening the benefits of the experience beyond the immediate group of participants.
Duration and Structure of the Project
Launched on 1 May 2023, the project has a planned duration of two years. Its implementation is structured around several transnational events, which provide concrete opportunities for meeting, dialogue and learning.
The first Staff Meeting took place in Hungary, marking the operational launch of the activities.
The second meeting was held in Malta, involving staff and trainers in planning sessions and methodological exchange.
A subsequent stage took place in Serbia, within a cultural and natural setting that highlighted the local dimension of the activities.
The project then moved to Spain, in Castellón de la Plana, strengthening the Mediterranean and intercultural dimension of the experience.
A further transnational event was organised in Poland, consolidating the European cooperation network.
Finally, the closing event was held in Orte (Italy), celebrating the pathways, competences acquired and relationships built throughout the project.
Each stage was conceived as a space for reflection, planning and dissemination of results, combining formal learning (meetings, workshops, working sessions) with informal learning (sports activities, shared experiences and cultural immersion).
A Sport for Everyone, A Project for Growth
What makes TIE-BREAK particularly meaningful is its ability to use sport as a lever for inclusion. Volleyball becomes a tool for overcoming cultural barriers, uncovering often unexplored potential and promoting a shared sense of belonging.
The training provided – both technical and relational – contributes to shaping a dynamic pedagogy in which body, action and interaction play a central role in the educational process. Participation in transnational activities also enables participants to engage with different realities and apply the competences acquired in real contexts, while strengthening awareness of a shared European cultural identity.
The final event in Orte represented the ideal setting to celebrate a common journey, demonstrating that inclusion also passes through mutual recognition and the appreciation of differences.
Why TIE-BREAK Makes a Difference
TIE-BREAK is not simply a sports project, but a formative pathway that intertwines body, mind, culture and community. It fosters the creation of lasting bonds, supports the acquisition of essential transversal skills for today’s world, and strengthens individuals’ active participation in intercultural contexts.
For ACe20, it represents a meaningful experience capable of generating replicable good practices and contributing concretely to the construction of a more cohesive, inclusive and participatory European citizenship.
